Exspiravit Luminaria

James A. Reeves 100% pure high-grade Blade Runner aesthetic: plaintive chords, the sonic sensation of endless twilight, and an image of some new lifeform crossbreeding Vangelis and Stars of the Lid at the edge of the sprawl.

MDonaldson (8sided.blog) San Mateo continues to exhibit a rapid stillness with this latest set of otherworldly tone poems. It's the music of time in relief, suspended as the world's simmering intensity continues to advance. Cool down; the heat is on. Favorite track: guilt suit.

about

** This album is 'name your price' until June 16 **

Nostalgia and sadness go hand-in-hand in the contemporary age as the sweep of time dissolves certainty with an unrelenting force. This feeling kindles the sound of San Mateo, the expressive project of audio and visual artist Matthew Naquin. Visually speaking, the music of San Mateo is darkly hued but colorful. Sparkles of light peek out from the edges. Despite all this modern dread, we remember that hope is part of uncertainty's story — things could fall in any direction while still moving forward.

Exspiravit Luminaria is San Mateo's latest album and it signals Naquin's growth not only as a visionary producer but also as an evocative composer. The six tracks are performed by Naquin on a limited array of hardware synthesizers but sound convincingly organic, like an ethereal quartet armed with stringed instruments. This approach to Exspiravit Luminaria was deliberate, with Naquin placing rigid constraints on his recording process and thoughtfully including flaws and subtle deviations. The result blends the boundaries between synthesizer music, orchestral soundtracks, and subdued post-rock.

Compelling titles like "guilt suit," "if panic! then release," and "mary celeste" are a gateway to the gentle, longing music within. And Naquin attaches melody and movement to his soundscapes, capturing almost tangible scenes from the near future. But San Mateo isn't predicting or projecting — ultimately it's up to the listener to imagine these scenes as hopeful or despondent. That's the sublime offering of Exspiravit Luminaria.

about

San Mateo Kansas City, Missouri

San Mateo bends soundscapes and fuzzy rhythms, filtered through film grain and lo-fi aesthetics. These songs are irresistibly melodic while strangely familiar, steeped in a tingling feeling of a shadow caught by the corner of an eye.
